The recent testimony from DCC Michael Anuga regarding Bobrisky’s detention at Kirikiri Maximum Prison highlights significant considerations around gender identity and the treatment of inmates.
Anuga stated that due to Bobrisky’s female features, including breasts, he could not be placed in a general cell.
A medical evaluation confirmed these features, prompting the prison officials to put him in protective custody for safety and compliance with international standards.
This decision reflects broader discussions about how correctional facilities accommodate individuals with diverse gender identities, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their safety and dignity while incarcerated.
’’During his admission, we discovered that Idris has a peculiar feature that can not allow us put him in a general apartment. Idris Okuneye Olanrewaju had female features. He has breast.”
’With this the admission, the board had to enter into a meeting to discuss on the best way to manage him. We arrived at the conclusion that we have to put him in a protective custody. He spent his time in B-ward room 2 of the facility and alone in that particular room. Why we did that is because we have to abide by the international best practices and according to our laws.”
