A tragic incident occurred in Benin City, Edo State, where a two-year-old girl, Gift Kelly Osaho, lost her life during a confrontation between members of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSR) and a commercial bus driver. The PSR agents attempted to seize the steering wheel of the moving bus, causing the driver to lose control. The bus veered off the road and collided with a roadside Point of Sale (POS) kiosk, instantly killing the child who was standing there with her mother.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the mother and child were thrown against concrete slabs by the impact, with the child suffering fatal injuries. The incident has sparked public outrage, with many demanding accountability and calling for the disbandment of the PSR unit due to concerns over their methods and training. There are also calls to revert to a cashless, digitized revenue collection system to prevent such tragedies.
As of now, neither the Edo State Government nor the police have released an official statement regarding the incident. The lack of response has intensified public anger, with citizens expressing frustration over the government’s silence and the perceived preventability of the death.
