Italian footballer Andrea Capone has tragically passed away at the age of 43.
He was found lifeless at the Palazzo Tirso Hotel, a luxury establishment in his hometown of Cagliari, on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Local media reports indicate that Capone had been out with friends before suffering a fatal fall, which is believed to have resulted in a severe head injury.
Despite the immediate efforts of medical personnel, they were unable to revive him. There are also speculations that a sudden cardiac event may have triggered the fall. Born in Cagliari, Capone rose through the ranks of his hometown club, making his professional debut at just 19 during the 2000-01 Serie B season against Crotone. Throughout his career, he played not only for Cagliari in Serie A but also for Sora, Treviso, Vicenza, Grosseto, and Salernitana.
In total, he made 123 appearances for Cagliari, scoring 12 goals and providing 7 assists.
The football community is in mourning, with tributes pouring in from fans, former teammates, and colleagues who knew him well.
Cagliari Calcio released a heartfelt statement, saying, “The bond with his homeland will remain unbreakable for a man who embodied professionalism, dedication, and passion. After leaving Cagliari, Capone had a brief stint with Celtic, participating in two pre-season friendlies before joining Serie B side Vicenza. His career also included short spells at Grosseto and Salernitana before he retired in 2010.
