Disagreement has erupted in Ahoada East, Rivers State, following the Inspector General of Police’s lifting of a three-month ban on local government secretariats. Tensions escalated as police fired into the air to disperse crowds resisting the return of the local chairman.
The police had earlier announced the reopening of all 23 local government secretariats in the state, following a closure that stemmed from a conflict between caretaker committee chairmen aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former chairmen loyal to Nyesom Wike.
In a related event, Governor Fubara recently swore in 23 newly elected local government chairmen after elections held by the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission. Meanwhile, there were reports of an attempted blockade at the Port Harcourt City LGA secretariat, which was resolved when supporters of the chairmen arrived.
Ichemati, the Port Harcourt chairman, was later seen overseeing maintenance of the council premises.
