Inter Miami forward, Lionel Messi set at least four new records after winning the 2023 Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Messi dwarfed Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to claim the prize in Paris.

The latest individual accolade means that the 36-year-old forward has now pulled three away from Cristiano Ronaldo as the record holder.

Messi is now officially the oldest player to win the Ballon d’Or in the modern era. The only person to have edged him in this regard is Sir Stanley Matthews – of ‘Matthews Cup final’ fame- who received the prize in 1956, at the age of 41.

The Argentina talisman is also the first player based outside of Europe to win the prize following his summer move to Inter Miami.

On top of this, he is the he first player to win the Ballon d’Or with three clubs, having reigned victorious at Barcelona and PSG previously.
