Veteran TV host Frank Edoho, known for anchoring the popular game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (WWTBAM), has disclosed that allegations of domestic violence almost derailed his career.
Speaking on the WithChude podcast, Edoho reflected on his turbulent first marriage to Katherine Obiang, with whom he shares three children. Describing the seven-year union as a “mismatch,” Edoho admitted both parties shared responsibility for the challenges they faced.
“My ex-wife was my friend, and we had children together, but I think ours was a mismatch. I was young, and when she got pregnant, I had cold feet, but I still got married. It lasted seven years, and in 2010, I left. Three years later, I remarried,”
Edoho revealed.
He acknowledged that the dynamics of friendship and marriage are vastly different, suggesting that neither he nor Obiang fully understood what they were getting into. “In hindsight, maybe I should have thought about it more. She was my good friend, and I think there was love, but we didn’t truly look at each other before taking that step,” he explained.
However, the situation took a darker turn after their separation, as rumors of domestic violence began circulating. Edoho revealed these allegations nearly cost him his job as the host of WWTBAM.
“That period was one of the most depressing times in my life. The first crisis in our marriage happened in 2007, but I stayed on for three more years. By 2010, I left,” he said.
Edoho recounted how the accusations escalated to the point that the sponsors of WWTBAM considered terminating his role. “I was in the UK when my boss called and told me to come back to Lagos because the sponsors were hearing things about me. They said I might not present the show anymore because of the rumors.”
Determined to clear his name, Edoho flew back to Lagos to address the issue. During a meeting with the sponsors, he shared a detailed account of his marriage, starting from the early days of dating to the eventual breakdown.
“By the time I finished recounting everything, two of the ladies in the room were crying. I told them I had evidence to support my story and clarified that nobody divorced me; I took my suitcase and left the marriage,”
Edoho said.
Edoho credited his transparency and the support of his boss for helping him retain his role on the show. His candid revelations have shed light on the personal struggles he faced while maintaining a successful television career.
The TV host’s story underscores the challenges of navigating personal and professional life under public scrutiny.
