A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday morning as several students of the University of Benin were trapped in a three-storey building collapse in Ekosodin, a densely populated area adjacent to the university. The building, located on Ekhator Street, Benin City, gave way during a downpour, sending shockwaves through the community, which hosts a large student population.
Eyewitnesses reported that some of the trapped students have been rescued, but search efforts are ongoing to locate others still buried under the debris. University officials, led by the Dean of Student Affairs, rushed to the scene to coordinate the rescue operations alongside a university rescue team.

One of the students who witnessed the rescue efforts told Channels Television that although some occupants were safely evacuated, many suffered severe injuries and were immediately transported to the hospital for treatment.

“There is still one student trapped inside the rubble who called from within. The rescue team is working tirelessly to locate and save her and others still unaccounted for,” the student said.

As of the time of reporting, the university management has not released an official statement on the cause of the collapse or the exact number of students affected by the tragedy. Rescue efforts are continuing.
