Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement (North Central), has recently sparked online discussions after sharing photos of her ongoing toilet project in a community in Plateau State.
The initiative, which was posted on her social media, aims to provide sanitation facilities specifically to address the challenges young girls face during their menstrual cycles. Essien emphasized that the project is intended to improve hygiene and create a safe environment for girls, particularly during their monthly periods.
Describing the projects as ‘’the renewed hope’, Abiola wrote;
‘’The first toilet in Nagohom Community, Mazah Ward, Plateau State is almost completed. It is built within the school compound
When it is completed
Our Girls will have a place to change their sanitary pads.
Our girls will not miss classes again when they are having their menstrual cycle
I have contributed to ending open Defecation in Nigeria.
I have contributed to the development of the Nagohom community.
The renewed hope is here ‘’
While the intention behind the project is commendable, it has drawn mixed reactions online.
Some people appreciate the effort to tackle a significant issue affecting young girls in rural communities, while others have criticized the project, questioning its scale and effectiveness compared to other pressing needs in the region.
