The bill for the creation of Ogoja State passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on October 17.
Sponsored by Godwin Offiono and three others, the bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to add an additional state in the South-South region.
Offiono emphasized that the bill is rooted in the principle of equity. If approved, it would increase the number of states in the South-South to seven.
The bill faced no opposition and has been referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration.
