The Senate and the National Council for Women Society have jointly advocated for the inclusion of domestic servants in Nigeria’s proposed N70,000 National Minimum Wage Scheme.
This call was made during a public hearing at the National Assembly in Abuja, focusing on a bill aimed at formalizing and registering domestic workers and their employers across the country.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Babangida Hussaini and organized by the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, has garnered support for its inclusion of domestic workers, such as housemaids and servants, under the proposed national minimum wage law.
Senator Osita Izunaso emphasized the importance of ensuring that domestic workers are not excluded from the benefits of this wage increase, mirroring the provisions for public sector employees.

The list of domestic servants in Nigeria includes various roles like house help, office servants, corps members and others. This move aims to establish fair compensation standards and legal protections for domestic workers, aligning their wages more closely with those in other sectors of the economy.
