In a dramatic intervention, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command successfully thwarted a suicide attempt by a 59-year-old man on the Third Mainland Bridge. The incident occurred on Friday, September 20, 2024, when the man, identified only as Yemi, tried to leap into the lagoon below.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, RRS bike patrols were conducting routine checks when they spotted Yemi preparing to jump. Upon questioning, he revealed that he felt overwhelmed by personal challenges.
“At approximately 12:00 PM, our officers intervened just in time to prevent a tragedy,” Hundeyin stated. “Yemi expressed that he was facing significant difficulties.”
Following the rescue, Commander RRS CSP Shola Jejeloye provided counsel to Yemi and arranged for him to be placed in protective custody until family members could arrive.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the critical role of timely intervention in preventing such tragedies.
