Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), recently addressed the backlash surrounding the lavish gifts given to Bishop David Oyedepo for his 70th birthday, including a Rolls Royce and N1 billion in donations.
Adeboye argued that clergymen and Christians would be criticized regardless of their financial status, stating that if they die poor, they will be blamed for not living abundantly.
He highlighted the dilemma faced by religious leaders, noting that they face scrutiny whether they live in wealth or poverty.
Adeboye’s comments reflect the ongoing debate about the appropriateness of wealth within religious contexts and the public perception of Christian leaders, suggesting that criticism is an inevitable part of their roles.
“Someone gave a bishop a car and some people got very upset, asking why a bishop should drive a Rolls Royce. It’s as if being a bishop means you should die of hunger.”

He continued, “If you die poor, they will blame you and say, ‘After all those years of serving God, this is how you ended?’ But if you start living in abundance, they will attack you. So, which one do you choose? You will be attacked whether you die poor or live in wealth.”
