The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is set to suspend Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and several others for engaging in activities detrimental to the party.
This announcement was made by Chief Edozie Njoku, the party’s National Chairman, during a press conference at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Njoku accused Governor Soludo of obstructing the Supreme Court-recognized NWC’s efforts to restore party harmony and continuing his anti-party actions.
He stated that by Thursday, September 26, 2024, the NWC would reveal the names of those facing suspension, including Soludo. Edozie emphasized that the party does not currently have a designated candidate for the upcoming off-cycle gubernatorial election in Anambra and questioned Soludo’s ability to secure victory in the party primaries. He insisted that any gubernatorial aspirants must follow the party’s established procedures.
In light of recent legal disputes, Edozie mentioned a stay order sought at the Court of Appeal to challenge his recognition by INEC, despite a favorable Supreme Court ruling. He criticized the opposing faction for initiating legal actions in Awka and at the Federal High Court without proper notification or adherence to legal protocols, praising INEC for rejecting these unfounded claims. Edozie also expressed concern about the upcoming local government elections in Anambra, set for the 28th, alleging that Soludo had influenced the House of Assembly to pass laws that would prevent the party from fielding candidates. He accused Soludo of acting like an emperor and undermining the party’s authority. Despite his efforts to promote unity, Edozie indicated that the NWC is compelled to consider suspensions due to Soludo’s actions, stating, “They think the governor is bigger than the party, but no one is above the party.” He highlighted the need for decisive action, referencing the chairman of the Board of Trustees’ call for the party to act decisively. Edozie reaffirmed APGA’s strength as a political entity, noting that the NWC has reached consensus on 80% of the individuals slated for suspension, including Soludo. While unsure if suspending the sole APGA governor is the right move, Edozie maintained that the party must take a stand if Soludo’s behavior continues, concluding with a reminder of the importance of respecting party rules.
