Kunle Remi, who played the main character Saro in the first season of Anikulapo, is notably absent from the cast list for the upcoming second season.
Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan announced the renewal of the series on Instagram, revealing that Netflix has confirmed the show’s return after its successful debut. The new season promises to explore deeper aspects of Nigerian history and culture, including the transatlantic slave trade.
Afolayan’s post highlighted the excitement surrounding the fresh talent joining the cast, with returning actors including Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Gabriel Afolayan, Owo Ogunde, Aisha Lawal, and Eyiyemi Afolayan.

Remi’s absence has sparked curiosity, especially considering Saro’s pivotal role in the first season, where his tragic journey intertwines with themes of ambition, love, and the consequences of pride after being resurrected by a magical bird.
The movie debuted as a Netflix original on September 30, 2022, and its sequel, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, began streaming on March 1, 2024. The series was written by Shola Dada and directed by Kunle Afolayan.
