A chemical explosion on Old Abeokuta Motor Road, opposite Vetland Secondary School in the Agege area of Lagos, has left at least one person seriously injured.
The explosion occurred around 6pm on Friday, with emergency responders quickly rushing to the scene. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that a female victim sustained first-degree burns but is now responding to treatment.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that the explosion resulted from various kegs containing unknown chemicals, which were stored in an open, fenced property. The Agege Fire and Rescue crew swiftly contained the fire, preventing further spread.
Adeseye also noted that the cause of the explosion appeared to be heat radiation from the chemicals, which had been left exposed to the sun. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact nature of the chemicals involved and who owns them.
Authorities are urging residents and business owners to ensure chemicals are properly stored to prevent such hazardous incidents in the future.
