Former Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has called on Nigerian youths to remain in the country and contribute to its growth, despite the ongoing economic difficulties. Speaking at the combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of Elizade University, Fashola urged young people to look beyond the allure of greener pastures abroad and strive to make a difference within Nigeria.
Fashola acknowledged the tough times facing the country but emphasized the importance of resilience and commitment. He urged the youth to rise to leadership roles and actively engage in decision-making processes to shape the future of the nation.

“Why did successful Nigerians like Mrs. Folorunso Alakija and Chief Tunde Afolabi choose to stay? Despite the hardships they faced, they remained in Nigeria and made significant contributions,” Fashola said. He reminded the audience of the challenges faced by previous generations, pointing out that even during tough times, individuals like Chief Ade-Ojo and Dr. Victor Olaiya did not abandon the country.

Fashola’s speech highlighted that the current generation of young Nigerians must embrace leadership, saying, “The youth have become the leaders of Nigerian households and must take on that responsibility. Leaders don’t run away when times are tough.”

He encouraged the graduates and other young Nigerians to take inspiration from those who have built legacies in the country and continue the work of nation-building.
