Authorities are set to prosecute a young man who attempted to coerce President Bola Tinubu into resigning by threatening suicide last Friday.
The Adamawa State Police Command rescued the individual on Saturday night after he climbed a high-tension pole in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area, demanding the President’s resignation before he would come down.
SP Suleiman Nguruje, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Metro that the young man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is now in custody in the state capital. “The command will parade the man today (Monday) for attempting suicide, which is a criminal offense under our constitution. We are preparing to charge him in court,” he stated.
Nguruje emphasized the police’s responsibility to protect lives and property, asserting that anyone attempting to take their life would face legal consequences.
On Friday morning, during Mayo-Belwa’s market day, the young man ascended the 33kv pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, insisting he would not descend until President Tinubu vacated the presidential villa.
Local residents were engaged by the police to help persuade him to come down, which they successfully accomplished on Saturday night.
Currently, the man is in protective custody at the Criminal Investigating Department of the Adamawa Police Command.
His attempts to pressure President Tinubu into resigning will likely be overshadowed by the legal proceedings related to his suicide threat.
