The succession of Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin as the next Alaafin of Oyo has ignited a significant dispute, overshadowing the initial praise for the Oyomesi’s selection process.
Although the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers, chose Gbadegesin to succeed the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, allegations of procedural flaws have emerged.
Critics argue that the selection process was improperly conducted, leading to controversy and widespread opposition.
The tension intensified after the Oyomesi submitted Gbadegesin’s name to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for approval, resulting in further backlash.
The Ladigbolu Ruling House, a key royal faction, has vocally opposed the move, insisting that the succession must adhere to traditional Ifa divination practices.
They have called for global Yoruba support to ensure the process respects longstanding customs. As the conflict drags on, it has heightened divisions within the community and left the future of the Oyo throne in a state of uncertainty.
