A passenger plane carrying 62 people has crashed in a residential area of Vinhedo, São Paulo, Brazil. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was speaking at an event in the south of the country, indicated that it appears all passengers and crew on the Voepass flight have died. He did not provide details on the source of this information but asked the audience to observe a minute of silence for the victims.
The airline, Voepass, has not yet confirmed the number of fatalities or injuries among the 58 passengers and 4 crew members. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
TV GloboNews broadcast footage showing a large fire and smoke rising from what appeared to be the plane’s fuselage. Social media videos captured the aircraft descending rapidly before impact.
The ATR-72 aircraft was reportedly traveling from Cascavel in the state of Paraná to São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport when the crash occurred.
