A crowd of MTN subscribers whose phone lines were barred by the network besieged the firm’s office in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday morning. Some individuals in the crowd became violent, throwing stones at the building. MTN, Nigeria’s largest mobile network, had barred the lines of several users on Sunday, allegedly due to their failure to link National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their phone numbers. Some affected individuals claimed the action was intended to disrupt a planned nationwide anti-government protest scheduled for Thursday. As of now, MTN has not issued an official statement, and the extent of the impact on mobile numbers remains unclear.
