Mike Igaga, father of 16-year-old Adeoluwa Igaga, has expressed grave concern over his son’s detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Adeoluwa, a first-year Computer Science student at the University of Ibadan, was arrested after a phone conversation with his father about a planned protest was intercepted by the DSS.

Mike Igaga described the discussion as a benign father-son conversation about advocating for better conditions at the university.

He recounted that the DSS, after learning of his son student status, contacted the university’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) to facilitate his arrest.

It was gathered Adeoluwa was detained without being informed of the specific charges against him and was handed over to the DSS by the university’s security unit.

Sources indicated that the DSS monitored phone conversations between Adeoluwa and his father during recent protests at the university, leading to the arrest.

Although Adeoluwa is expected to be released, he is currently writing a statement at the university’s security office and has been instructed to return on Monday.

This incident aligns with recent patterns of DSS actions against youths participating in nationwide protests.

“My boy is just 16 years old and is a minor. The DSS tapped our conversation and got him arrested through the Chief Security Officer of the University of Ibadan.”
“They did not tell him his offence at the office of the CSO. He was only told the DSS needed to see him and that was how they detained him,” the father lamented.
