In Lagos, a recent shortage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, has led to significant disruptions and heightened transport costs. Motorists and commuters are facing long fuel queues and increased transport fares as commercial bus drivers, known as Danfos and Koropes, pass on the rising fuel costs to passengers.

Fuel prices have surged, with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) stations selling at N650 per litre and independent marketers charging between N850 and N950 per litre. Many filling stations are either closed or have long queues, contributing to road congestion. Some black market sellers are capitalizing on the scarcity, offering petrol at inflated prices of up to ₦1000 to ₦1400 per litre.

A Danfo driver, Mr. Jude Akpan, reported spending significantly more on fuel, which has led him to raise fares for passengers. For instance, trips that used to cost N200 now range between N500 and N700, depending on the route and negotiation.

With the planned nationwide protest over economic issues just days away, the situation could worsen if the authorities do not address the underlying causes of the fuel shortage.
