Ngozi Nwosu, a veteran Nollywood actress, expressed her concern over the current state of Nollywood films in a recent interview with Pulse.
She lamented the predictable and unrelatable nature of many modern movies, attributing this trend to the rise of inexperienced producers who prioritize profit over quality storytelling.
According to Ngozi, there has been a decline in thorough research and careful representation in today’s films. She emphasized that in the past, filmmakers were more conscientious about how they portrayed characters and stories. However, she observed a shift where creativity and authenticity have been compromised, leading to films that lack depth and fail to resonate with audiences.
Ngozi highlighted a perceived lack of accountability in today’s film industry, where individuals are less cautious about their actions and are willing to sacrifice substance for quick financial gains. She noted with concern that the level of artistic integrity and respect for audience sensibilities has diminished over time, allowing for more controversial and provocative content without regard for its impact.
“A lot of people who are not supposed to be producers are now producers. Wishy-washy stories every day. There are some stories you read, and you know immediately this is from foreign movies. They are not relatable. People have become lazy. They don’t want to research again because they are after the money.”
“We no longer relate as we used to anymore. We used to go to our fellow actors’ houses and drink water, but you can’t do that anymore because you don’t know who to trust. All leaves are lying down, but you don’t know the one with a stomach ache.”
“People in our time were more careful with how they represented themselves, but now everybody does whatever they want. Today, if you like, be naked, no one cares”.
